So after I decided to pay attention to our shopping habits and food waste I started writing down some data so I can measure how much food we waste. I thought the hardest thing would be organizing the whole family participating and not forgetting to write down everything. Actually the hardest thing was facing the results. Don’t get me wrong, I knew we were wasting a lot of food, spending a lot of time shopping, over-buying, etc. But the process of taking all these notes makes it so real and so much more noticeable. Honestly, I’m shocked. But let’s just see the numbers.
Time spent shopping in minutes (doesn’t include time to the shop and back): 71 minutes
Spontaneous shopping trips: 1
Food thrown away in GBP: 7.90
I can’t believe we spent more than an hour food shopping in just 7 days. This is more than 10 minutes a day. I am a full-time working mom of two and I will definitely be happy to spend less time in the food market. Just 1 unexpected trip to the shop sounds satisfying to me, I thought it would be more. Now let’s pay attention to the money in the garbage. This week I threw away food that cost me exactly as much as: Star Wars: The Force Awakens DVD, 25 by Adele CD, an English Dictionary. Instead of buying one of these I have a bin full of food.
The second week doesn’t start well, either. I will let you know once I have the results. Cross your fingers
